Could you pass a mock recall?
By law, food manufacturers need a written recall plan. FSANZ recommends a mock recall, a practice run, once a year. Tick each item when it's true for you.
Before you start
- Your written recall plan is up to date, checked in the last 12 months, and your team can get to it from anywhere.
- One person is in charge of recalls, and everyone knows their job.
- You have current contact details for your state or territory food authority, FSANZ, your suppliers, distributors and customers.
Trace back
- Pick one batch you've made recently. List every ingredient and packaging lot that went into it.
- For each ingredient, you can show the supplier's name and address.
Trace forward
- You know how much of the batch you made, how much is still on site, and whether any is missing.
- You can list every customer who got the batch, how much they got, how to contact them and which state they are in.
- Your distributors could quickly tell you who they sold the batch to.
- You could quickly give FSANZ the product details: name, use-by or best-before date, batch code, label photo, and how much you made and sent out.
Contact and review
- You know who would call your state or territory food authority as soon as a recall might be needed.
- You timed each step, wrote down any problems, and fixed them.
- Your team has had refresher training, and you'll do another practice run within a year.
